In China, the LGBTQ community faces heavy media censorship. On Pride Month, Shanghai Pride turned the city’s clotheslines into our proudest expression—the rainbow. They brought together the LGBTQ community in solidarity, getting them to Raise Their Pride in plain sight.

Update: In August 2020, two months after Pride Day, Shanghai Pride, the only major and longest-running LGBTIQ celebration in China, was abruptly forced to shut down. This is a major blow to the country’s LGBTIQ movement, which, like other civil society movements, has been suffering an increasing state clampdown.
